Overview of tolls 2024

All tolls 2024 at a glance

We at maut1.de deal with the different tolls within the EU on a daily basis.

There are different tolls depending on the country: Freeways, bridges, tunnels, expressways, route tolls and the city toll.

In many European travel destinations, a toll is charged for the use of motorways and highways or particularly busy transport structures such as bridges and tunnels.

This toll is intended to finance the construction or maintenance of the relevant infrastructure and is also partly intended to ensure that the flow of traffic can be steered towards less busy times of day or days of the week, e.g. during peak travel times, in order to reduce congestion.

Different types of tolls:

A time-based, flat-rate toll allows you to drive on certain routes for a certain period of days, months or a year. This charge is usually levied in the form of an (e-)vignette, e.g. in Switzerland or Austria.

In the case of a distance-based toll, the individual distance travelled is calculated and payment is usually made at a toll station, e.g. in France and Italy.

The type of vehicle plays a role in both types of toll, with size, length and weight being taken into account, resulting in different tolls for motorbikes, cars or lorries, for example.

Special tolls are tolls that are charged for travelling over bridges and passes or through tunnels. Examples include the Brenner Pass between Austria and Italy or the Mont Blanc Tunnel between France and Italy.

In many large cities, charges are levied in the form of a congestion charge (=city toll) to reduce the volume of traffic or increase the attractiveness of local public transport. Incidentally, the world's first congestion charge was introduced in Singapore in 1975.

Convenient toll payment with the toll box

At the toll stations, simply use the lanes reserved for drivers with a toll box and drive past the frequent traffic jams in the lanes to pay by cash or credit card!
