The toll in France is getting more expensive

Discounts for commuters and electric vehicles

The operators of the French motorways have announced an increase in tolls for all French toll roads for 2023. From February 2023, prices for use will increase by an average of 4.75 per cent. The motorway company Sanef, which is responsible for the north and east of France, has specified increases of between 4.62 and 4.81 per cent, depending on the route. Despite this price increase, drivers of electric vehicles still have the advantage of using the toll roads in France more cheaply than drivers of petrol and diesel cars.

Discounts for commuters and e-cars

The operators, in cooperation with the French government authorities, have decided that owners of electric vehicles travelling on French motorways (toll roads) will receive a five percent discount. However, this discount will be limited to one year. Thus, the toll for electric cars will be even cheaper than before during this period.

In addition, regular users of the motorway, i.e. those who can prove at least ten return journeys on the same route in the course of a month, will be allowed to benefit from an increased discount of 40 percent instead of the current 30 percent.

French motorways are operated by private companies, with tolls adjusted every year on 1 February in cooperation with the government. In 2022, tolls increased by an average of two per cent, compared to an increase of only 0.44 per cent in the year before.

Advantage for vehicles with toll box

If you want to drive on the toll roads in France, it is advisable to use a maut1.de toll box that is compatible with the Télépéage system. This way, waiting times at toll stations can be reduced or even avoided.

The maut1.de toll box is attached to a holder behind the rear-view mirror of the windscreen and is read automatically when driving past the toll station. The corresponding charges are debited directly and you then receive a detailed statement. This enables quick and uncomplicated clearance of vehicles.

To take advantage of the toll box, all you have to do is move to a lane with a "t" sign.

CONCLUSION

From February 2023, tolls for using the motorway will increase by an average of 4.75 per cent. However, owners of electric vehicles will receive a discount of five per cent on French toll roads for at least one year, allowing them to drive more cheaply overall. There is also relief for commuters.
