Insurance is an important part of any holiday, especially when it comes to travelling by car. Before you hit the road, it's crucial to make sure your vehicle and yourself are adequately protected.

Car insurance is a legal requirement and offers protection in the event of accidents or damage to your own vehicle. However, in addition to compulsory third-party liability insurance, there are other types of insurance that are relevant when travelling by car.

Comprehensive insurance not only covers damage to your own vehicle, but also damage caused by accidents, vandalism or theft. This can be particularly reassuring if you are travelling to unfamiliar areas or leaving your car unattended for long periods of time. Navigation systems, luggage, bicycles or other items are often stolen directly from the car. Check which thefts are covered by your fully comprehensive insurance and to what value.

Foreign travel health insurance is also essential, especially if you are travelling abroad. It offers protection in the event of illness or injury during your trip and often also covers repatriation or medical treatment abroad that is not covered by statutory health insurance. If you are travelling with your family, check whether your children and dependants are also covered.

Luggage insurance can be useful to protect your personal belongings against loss, theft or damage. Especially if you are travelling with valuable or important items, such insurance can offer you financial security. This insurance is sometimes already covered by comprehensive insurance, check your insurance policy here.

In addition to these specific insurances, it is also advisable to check your existing insurance policies. Your health, accident or household contents insurance may already provide some cover during your holiday trip. You should therefore clarify in advance whether and to what extent you are already covered. Some insurance policies also cover towing in the event of a breakdown; the ADAC is not always necessary here, some car insurance policies also offer this service.

Ultimately, insurance is an important part of preparing for your trip, helping to minimise potential risks and give you a sense of security while you enjoy your well-deserved holiday. So before you set off on holiday by car, take the time to check your insurance situation and adjust it if necessary. That way you can concentrate fully on the adventure ahead of you.
